Just over a year after Frank Bruno cut the ribbon to start the Rock Island restaurant in the Thomas a Becket at Old Kent Road, the place was repossessed, setting the future of this historical bar back in uncertainty.
The bar, whose current building dates from 1898 but includes a far longer legacy, is well known for hyperlinks into the boxing world and also conveys a blue plaque to indicate its relation to the late Henry Cooper. David Bowie rehearsed at a room over the bar in the 1970s.
Three decades ago the building was recorded as an'advantage of community worth' beneath the Localism Act following a campaign by the Walworth Society, motivated by information that the bar had been up for sale .
The place's prospects appeared to be advancing when Frank Bruno and also the Mayor of Southwark conducted the opening ceremony for its new Rock Island grill on Valentine's Day 2017.
